Hello everyone! My name is Melissa Hughes, and I am thrilled to be the Tee-ball Director for Sherrills Ford Optimist. My husband, Scott and I, along with our kids Weston and Wrenley, moved to Sherrills Ford about four years ago from New Hampshire. We both grew up down the road in Salisbury and after Covid, decided it was time to move home to be closer to family and friends. We are so lucky to have found Sherrills Ford and this community.
I really enjoy our community and have really tried to immerse myself in a lot of ways. Besides joining the Optimist and coaching tee-ball and basketball, I drive a school bus for Sherrills Ford Elementary, held positions on the PTO board, and I’m also involved with our local Cub Scout Pack.I knew I wanted to get involved with my kids’ activities and I pretty much started coaching tee-ball as soon as we moved here. Being a sports mom was always something that made me truly happy, but since I began coaching it has really made my life, yes, more hectic but also so much more enriched in so many ways. I love that I’ve made great friends from getting to know many of my team’s parents. Also being involved in the school lets me see all these kids’ bright faces off the field and I love hearing “HEY COACH” and getting high-fives and even some friendly heckling from the basketball kiddos around game time when they see me!I grew up playing sports all year round as a kid. Volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer and even rugby in college shaped my life and left me with long lasting values and friendships. So, I’m so excited to give back to our community in a way that I feel is so very important to our youth. I truly believe in sports as a healthy outlet for our children and a great way to socialize, grow and form lasting friendships. Please don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me out on the field, on the court, around the school or even at the grocery store! I love a good chat and getting to know new people!
